“The Little Room”, by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond

The name of the film is « The Little Room», this movie was written by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond. It was made in 2010 in Switzerland, it’s a psychologial film. It takes place in our time.

Rose is a young woman who is a nurse who looks after people in their homes. She has to care for Edmond, an elderly gentleman who has heart problems and he has diabetes. Edmond is very stubborn and he holds on to his freedom, he doesn’t want to go to a retirement home even if his son wants it. After a heart attack, he is admitted to hospital. He wants to come back home but his doctors and his son don’t want that. Rose takes him to her flat where they will find an empty apartment, filled only with cardboard boxes. So Rose takes him to her home. They get to know each other.  Rose will discover that Edmond had lost his wife 40 years ago at the Diablerets (a mountain in Switzerland) and Edmond will discover Rose has problems with her husband and that she had a stillborn baby. Edmond goes to the Diablerets to say goodbye to his wife and to end his days. Rose is very sad by the death of her old friend. At the end, we see Rose happy with her husband, pregnant again.

Michel Bouquet plays Edmond and Florence Loiret plays Rose. Véronique Reymond and Stéphanie Chaut are two friends. Véronique was born 31 Marchs 1971 and Stéphanie 10 November 1970. They live in Lausanne. They are actresses by training. They had a few conflicts during the making of the film but they always said : «  Our friendship is more important that the film. »

I didn’t like this film because there is not a lot of action and I think that the film is very slow. I didn’t like Florence Loiret in this film because I find her monotonus and boring. However, I find the story is beautiful. For a first movie, Véronique and Stéphanie made a good job.

The message of the film is that the old people are very lonely and we have a lot to learn from them.
